The US Open!

Last weekend, Mountain Creek Resort in majestic Vernon, NJ held the annual US Open. A stand alone race from all the other cup series in North America. With the top pro male and female taking home $5,000 each, as well as huge prizes for amateurs; it always brings big names and loud crowds! This year, practice and qualifying went off without a hit. The weather was beautiful and the trails in good shape. It was not until Sunday afternoon that the skies opened up and absolutely poured for 45 minutes. Fortunately the amateur men had already finished, but only two junior riders were able to make it down before the lift was shut-off and the remaining riders were asked to head down the hill to find shelter. The rocks got slick, and the dirt got a little wet. Most riders were using dry tires and did not expect it to get as slick as it did, especially for the junior men and pro women who went after the rain. In the end, it was Sam Hill and Miranda Miller who grabbed the cash.

Evan Turpen was looking fast all day, throwing down whips in practice, he always seems to feel at home here. With a top 10 finish he certainly turned a lot of heads as to what ET can truly do on a bike. Evan uses our Split-Second DM stem in a 31.8mm clamp size. It increases stiffness while keeping his bike light, please check one out.

Katie Holden is capable of some fast times on a bike. She had a couple mistakes in her qualifier and still managed a 6th place! She knows she can win and pushed it hard for the final. Although she rides even better in the wet, unfortunately a couple crashes knocked her off the podium. Katie uses our limited edition nickel version of the Split-Second DM stem. Even lighter, yet remaining as stiff.

Weaverville, CA "Gravity Day"

Check out Jordan Lopez and his report from last weekend's Gravity Day in beautiful Weaverville, CA:

Super D:
I am stoked to say that I was able to finish this 8 mile Super D race in second place behind my friend Matt Wittler with a time of 26:56 (30 seconds behind First Place). This race consisted of a very steep/rocky/slippery start going into a covered single track and ending in a exposed/sandy finish. It was a great race and I am very excited with this result because I feel that it is a good indicator that my training is going in the right direction for the Downieville AM

Downhill:
I am happy to say that I was able to finish this race in Fifth Place with several mistakes and coming to a complete stop in a very sandy corner. This race consisted of a "best of two run" format and because of its length (3 miles / 8:04 run) it was physically exhausting. Due to the racing schedule of the day and the shuttle pick up being 20 min away, I was not able to practice the lower section of this race course and I know that this definitely hurt my chances at a top finish. In my first run, I slid out into a long "off-camber" corner in the top section and with a few other mental mistakes I was able to pull together a semi-decent run. In my second run, I had a very clean/smooth top section and my split time was one of the fastest of the day until I rear flatted with 150 yd to go. My second run time was 9:18.

Yet, I had a great day of racing and tons of fun riding and racing on terrain that is completely different than what I normally ride on.
I now look forward to the next US CUP race at Elings Park in Santa Barbara CA, June 5th - 7th.

Thanks Jordan!

Survey Winner!

Congratulations to Trent Blucher from Australia for winning a Split-Second DM stem! Trent was the lucky winner from our online survey. Please head back to our homepage and enter our next contest for a chance to win a set of these:

CCCX DH #5

Unseasonably warm weather brought temperatures into the upper 90's for race day at CCCX #5 in Salinas, CA. It was certainly noticeable by the lack of a large turnout, but those brave few fought the scorching heat, dripping sweat and dusty, technical course. With only two races to go, point standings are tightening up. Some classes will bring it all the way to the finale on July 5th to decide who will make it or fake it. Point One Racing, as always, was out there running their elite components with their top athletes.

Ian Massey, sleeveless and all, had a few mistakes and barely missed the box in pro men by six tenths of a second.

Keith Morelan has upgraded to pro, riding the DH bike and still looking fast as ever, 6th place on the day for him.

Josh Maurer also has stepped up to pro after last year dominating the sport class. He is definately turning heads and doing it quickly! 10th place.

Scott Seery, with his newly found passion of racing a "klunker" has decided to form his own team, with the help of Point One Racing of course. More details on that to come, but a heavy steel frame, drum brakes and no suspension does not slow him down, 3rd place in single-speed and only a second off of first place. Amazing!

Mike Amaral was only able to take one practice run but that did not keep him from stepping on the box, 4th place on the day and still in contention for a top three finish overall.

I told Allen Stoddard that I was expecting a win out of him, and he did not disappoint, pulling out an impressive win in the pro class! He said he had the run of his life and he was not kidding. Congratulations!

Alex Amaral, so far with an un-defeated win streak in the junior expert class unfortunately had a couple slide outs which cost him the win. He still managed a podium spot and should retain the overall. Good job Alex.

Pro Gravity Tour #1

Last weekend was the first stop on the Pro Gravity Tour. A new series this year that picks the best venues from several different series including the Fluidride and Mountain States Cups. Stop #1 was held in beautiful Port Angeles, Washington. Lots of high caliber pros were in attendance as well as a lot of fast juniors! Earlier in the year it was announced that this race would be a world's qualifier for juniors, so you know the competition would be intense! Some rain the night before kept the downhill course nice, tacky and technical, the way it should be.

Katie Holden was on fire all weekend! Winning both her qualifier and final by a good margin! Women's Pro #1!!!

Keith Morelan, Forest Belluzzi, Hans Keisler and Logan Kemp were in an all out battle for that world's qualifying spot! Not one single junior expert rider was looking slow, so having a close-to, if not a perfect run was key to finishing towards the top. When the tacky dirt settled, it was Forest who edged out the other guys with a 2:51.91, good enough for 5th place! Keith was POINT ONE seconds behind him. Logan and Hans finished 34th and 35th respectively, with only three-tenths of a second separating them! Look at the style check on these photos:

Chris Lauber had a bad crash in practice the day before and tweeked his knee a bit. He was still feeling good and ready to race. Keeping it conservative to prevent re-injury he came down mid-pack with a great time in Expert 19-29. Good job!

Alex Amaral had a day to remember (or maybe to forget). During his race run, a lady crossed the track at a blind-spot. By the time she noticed Alex, it was already too late. A collision insued, but luckily both ended up being alright aside from some cuts and bruises. Alex was give a second race run in which a toddler had wandered on to the track, fortunately Alex saw the child ahead of time and moved out of the way, but unfortunately it caused him to go off-course and flip over the bars. Alex was given a third race run and after all the struggle and fatigue he still pulled off a 14th place, beating his qualifying time by 5 seconds. Very impressive Alex!

Santa Ynez Valley National

The Point One Racing crew ventured down to beautiful Los Olivos, CA for the Santa Ynez Valley National. This was the 5th stop on the Kenda Cup West tour (3rd stop after Fontana and Sea Otter if you are a gravity racer). High winds on Saturday made DH practice and dual slalom racing pretty interesting.

Jimmy and Alex Amaral raced dual slalom and both finished very well. 5th in Pro men for Jimmy and 2nd for Alex in Jr. Expert.

After a quiet and cold evening of camping under a new moon. Sunday morning was the traditional pancake breakfast, we do it every year. Winds died down considerably, which meant it was on for DH racing. Jordan Lopez was fastest on the day for Point One Racing (3rd in Pro).

Jr. Expert riders Alex Amaral, Logan Kemp and Allen Stoddard all were in a battle for the lead after their first runs. In the end it was Alex who barely edged out Allen and unfortunately Logan crashed in his second run. Placing 3rd, 4th and 9th place, respectively.

Chris Lauber, no longer in Jr. Ex moved into the 19-24 big boy class. He held his own and finished a very impressive 6th place.

Jimmy Amaral was on fire all weekend. Seems like both Kevin Aiello and Eric Carter were the guys to beat and Jimmy was definately on par. A few mistakes in his race runs unfortunately gave him a still respectable 6th place finish in Pro men.
