Mike's Corner 4/16/2012

We are starting something new here at Point One Racing, and so far "Mike`s Corner" will be the name of this column. The focus will be my take on what's happening both here at Point One, and with mountain biking in general. Along the way, I am hoping to be testing new products from different companies, and spread the word in general. Since Sea Otter is starting this week, let’s begin with that. It is very cool that this HUGE mountain biking (and road) event takes place in Point One`s backyard. Say what you want about costs, crowds and the venues, it’s STILL fun to check the Sea Otter out, and spend time friends.

Point One will not have a booth this year, but all of us should be there, taking in the vibe, and supporting the racers. Before I get too far into this, I should let folks know that I am Dad to Joe, Alex and Jimmy, who is the Co-founder of Point One Racing (along with Jonathan Cofer and Tim Lukko) and have been riding mountain bikes since 1981. I also did a little motocross before that, and raced all over Northern California. I still love racing, and especially enjoy being part of the CCCX Super-D events down in Monterey-Salinas (actually across and down the street from the Sea Otter). Keith Defiebre and Rod Hernandez do a fantastic job of bringing a real family feel to those events and many of the people I have met there have told me the same. It is like a picnic in beautiful Toro park, with a mountain bike race thrown in! If you own a 5-6 inch bike, you will love the courses. With all the rain lately in Nor-Cal, the places we all ride regularly like Henry Coe and Santa Cruz are simply off the hook with traction and green grass, Sea Otter will be the same.

The next column will include a Sea Otter report, along with a test on the new Split-Second 70 stem from Point One. In closing out, I would like to thank my riding partner and wife, Sue, for putting up with all of us boys and for making the best sandwiches in the pits...along with motivating me to write this new column.
