Our rider out in the field, Scott Seery just gave us a full race report from the Keyesville Classic last weekend. Scott goes to show you how truly fast you can go on any bike. Thank you Scott!
I and my klunker got lots of exposure. I was even written up in "Adventure World Magazine", although not by name, as the "highlight of the event". Even with a flat tire on the last bit of the Snake Pit run (it's a two-race format on two different courses, Dutchman Flat and Snake Pit), I handily won the DH in the pre-'86 vintage class, and would have taken the overall vintage had I not flatted at the fastest point of the 2nd race run, not far from the finish. Darn it.
I also got 2nd in the pre-'86 vintage XC race aboard a 1986 Fat Chance I recently restored, just 2 weeks prior.
The klunker took a pounding, though. The head tube might be cracked, and in the aftermath of the flat tire and attempts to power the cranks after the tube wrapped around the rear cog, tire around the frame, I mananged to mangle the rare TA chain ring, and also may have bent one of the tabs on the TA crank. I have yet to take a closer look.
The best quote of the event was while I was practicing the Snake Pit while aboard the klunker. As I was surveying lines through the 'Pit a couple of groms were standing on the boulders above with 8" bikes in hand.
One was saying the section was too difficult to ride. Can't be done.
A few moments later I charged into it on my 70 year old bike and cleaned it on my first attempt.
One grom then turned and said to the other, "Dude - a beach cruiser just cleaned it! We SUCK!!"
